Go Kart
In essence, the go kart is a small vehicle without suspension. They come in a variety of models and forms, ranging from gravity-driven, motor-less karts, to high-powered go karts meant to be raced competitively. The go kart is often associated with children—and indeed many children and teenagers enjoy riding them. However, people of all ages often use go karts—whether as a specific hobby, or as a way to get practice in other kinds of vehicle racing. Some people are interested in go karts because they enjoy building them. If you have kids, this can make a great gift while providing you with a fun hobby along the way.
Karts vary widely in speed and design. Some karts are capable of reaching 160 miles per hour. These are often called “super karts.” Other karts, intended for light recreational enjoyment at amusement parks, go no faster than 15 miles per hour. There are many options of speed and power in between.
There are also a wide variety of situations in which the go kart is raced. One of the most commonly used forms are the small circuit track, usually designed for beginners. These circuits usually provide you with a go kart, and provide a track about a half mile long, with tires and other forms of protection aligning the perimeter.
These circuits are used more for fun than for direct speed, or for racing training. These circuits can be popular places for parents to take their children, as they are designed to be safe and entertaining, while providing some amount of the sensation of speed. They are also more affordable than investing in a go kart and all of the other supplies and accessories—not to mention the fact that they assuage some parents’ concerns about safety.
Of course, go karts can also be raced on much longer tracks, at much higher speeds. Generally the go karts used in these conditions are of higher quality and have more capability. If you just bought or built your first go kart, one of these tracks might be a good way to test it. The tracks used for competitive kart racing can sometimes be rented and used recreationally as well, for amateur riders looking to become more proficient behind the wheel. This can be a good way to get meaningful practice if you do one day hope to race.
There are also go karts designed to be driven off road, as well as those which feature an electric engine. The best design for you will depend on how you plan to use your go kart. Moreover, upgrades and customizations are often possible even after you have the initial part. If part of the reason you like your go kart is for the hobby of designing it, this can be a good option for you. Kits are available containing everything you need to build a go kart from scratch, which can be a great hobby for a parent and child, or anyone with a developing interest in mechanics and engineering.
